The entrance to the city through the town walls was from 1243 till the beginning of the 19th century a large tower in which the door was set. Around 1820 the tower was knocked down and replaced by a much smaller one. Two lions were set approximately 6 meters high left and right of the main door where two smaller entrances to the city were. It was called “Ludwigstor” after a visit from King Ludwig I. of Bavaria to Passau.
This entrance was also torn down later as it stood in the way of the new streets in the area. The two lions were lost and forgotten until 1994 when they were found in the cathedral courtyard. After a successful renovation they were then placed back to their old spot in the Ludwigstrasse.
