Until 2018, this question was deliberately posed in a misleading manner, because the vineyards in question are near the little Austrian Danube city of Krems. These vineyards in the Wachau, which have been leased to the renowned „Salomon Undhof“ winery since 1963, are among the donations with which the Passau city judge and mint master Urban Gundacker in 1358 (!) „built a hospital for thirteen poor men“ and the associated foundation has been richly endowed. Even today, the proceeds from viticulture (Grüner Veltliner and Riesling) benefit the Bürgerliche Heiliggeist Foundation Passau and also the retirement home. The approximately 50,000 square meters of land are looked after by six permanent employees. In the time of grape harvest it is increased to 15 assistants. The city of Passau manages the foundation in trust.
For about three years there is wine made in Passau. High above the Danube the vintner Hubert Weizenberger grows eight different grape varieties on 15,000 square meters, which are sold either directly on site or in well-stocked Passau delicatessen shops.
